In a world that's completely covered in sand, humanity lives on floating islands. One island, called Mud Whale, is home to a village inhabited by people who have supernatural powers but will also pass away early. 

One of these inhabitants is the village archivist, Chakuro. Chakuro is in search of other islands, but those islands are rare, and whenever they do appear they're usually uninhabited. But one day, an island appears that has evidence of a former civilization — not only that, but there's a girl still living there! This girl will completely change Chakuro's life — and Mud Whale's civilization.
