Alter 1/6 Lala Deviluke MyFigureCollection.net
About the character: Lala Deviluke is a character from the To Love Ru media franchise. Lala is the princess of planet Deviluke, from which she flees because of the unwanted attention she is prone to receive from her many suitors. While fleeing, she winds up in protagonist Rito's bathtub, and slowly but surely a harem begins to form around Rito. Lala is also quite an intelligent young lady, and she has a knack for inventing machines, although sometimes her creations don't exactly work as expected.
Packaging----------8/10
To my surprise, when I opened up the shipping box, I was greeted by another corrugated cardboard box!
Inside, the figure box itself was further wrapped in tissue paper. This was one well-protected figure box.
As is increasingly the norm with Alter figures, a clear plastic box is used.
Both the front and back panels allow a good view of Lala, handy if you decide to keep her boxed.
Each of the side panels feature full-body shots of Lala.
Lala inside the blister. Her tail is fairly flexible, but all the same, I'd be careful when opening up the blister.
Overall, the packaging is fine, but that corrugated box adds a lot of weight to the package. My Lala shipped to me by herself, and the weight of figure + corrugated inner box + shipping box was 1.4 kg. If you hunt her secondhand and the seller dispenses with the corrugated box, you might subtract about 300 grams from that when computing Lala's shipping weight.
Posing----------8.5/10
Lala's pose is not hugely dynamic, but it does have some interesting features. Despite the fact that To Love Ru is not shy about ramping up the fan service, Lala is not really pandering to the viewer. She seems very relaxed and contemplative which makes for a neat look.
Let's have a look at her.
Overall, Lala displays nicely from a number of angles, and I rather like the relaxed vibe that she gives off.
Sculpting----------9/10
Painting----------9.5/10
Expectations were high for this figure, and Alter does not disappoint. The overall quality of the figure is excellent, but there are a couple of small issues on the sculpting front. However, these are balanced out by a number of interesting small details.
Alter certainly did a nice job with the sculpt of Lala's face. Her pale green eyes really stand out in person, and the blush is handled well. It's quite noticeable, but at the same time the blush doesn't overwhelm her face. If you're being picky, note the little shiny spot right beneath her mouth. I'm not sure what happened there...
I like how she appears to be wistfully looking off in the distance.
One of Lala's key features is her ahoge, and sometimes the ahoge attachment point can be a real disaster, but Alter does a reasonably good job on this front.
That line running down the middle of her head looks to be a spot where two separate pieces of hair meet. It was conspicuous enough that I was able to notice it, but I had a hard time making it stand out in a photo.
One very interesting feature of this figure is Lala's twintails. That's not really her default hairstyle, but as a twintail aficionado, I'm not complaining. The way the ends of her ponytails are splaying out almost brings to mind a gentle breeze. Also, while I'd be careful handling them, the tips of her hair are somewhat flexible and decidedly non-rigid, so that will be appreciated as well if you are inclined to move around your figures from time to time.
At first, I thought the tips of her hair were made from a translucent material, but it's just a really well-done color gradient.
Lala's hair clip is actually a robot named Peke. Peke is capable of transforming herself into various articles of clothing for Lala. Maybe Peke is running low on power, and hence the explanation for Lala's skimpy bikini...
Lala's bikini top would probably be classified as a micro bikini, given the relatively low material to skin ratio. The wrinkling of the material seems appropriate, as overall fit of Lala's top seems quite tight.
That is one nicely-sculpted stomach! The detail on her navel, the way her inner thighs transition to her pelvis, and the fact that just a suggestion of her ribcage are visible are all very interesting features. It's also worth noting that her skin is very, very smooth. Sometimes a sign of sloppy finishing is a very rough feel, and there's none of that to be had here. Further, I really how Alter gives Lala a very fair complexion *without* making her look like a vampire!
There's just a little bit of a gap where her top meets her body.
There's some nice definition on her shoulder blades.
The pastel green bracelet complements the other soft colors which are present.
Of course, one feature of this figure that is impossible to ignore is Lala's extra short short-shorts.
One reason I like Alter so much is the little details they always seem to include. Note the backside of the button on her shorts and the buttonhole!
I'm really being picky here, but I would have liked to see a little more texture on her denim shorts, kind of like Vertex did with their recent figure of Pochaco item/235623. Also, there's a little bit of a gap between Lala's shorts and body on her left hip, as well as a little bit of excess glue along her waist.
The Daisy Duke effect is taken to 11!
A low-angle shot.
Again, this is being picky, but the bikini tie is a little bit chunky and that sunken-in spot on Lala's elbow looks a little bit strange.
Demon girls are one of my primary moe points, and the way Lala's tail is wrapping around her leg is a neat feature. It's established that Lala's tail is quite sensitive, and her power drains quickly when someone touches it...
Note the color gradient on the tail end.
Alter really gave a lot of attention to Lala's shoes. The red-on-pink blotchy pattern, the "metal" eyelets and the horizontal stripe on the soles are all interesting details. I also like how she's wearing sneakers instead of the omnipresent sandals you see with beach figures.
Base----------8/10
Two pegs attach Lala to the base. I would have actually preferred to see her screwed to the base, as this is not a small figure, and when I was taking these photos she would wobble ever so slightly when moved.
On the plus side, the base is quite small (just over 4 inches/10 cm in diameter), and the rather minimalistic feel of the base will not distract the viewer from Lala herself.
Scale Comparison
Ahoge included, I measure Lala at just under 10 inches (25 cm) in height. Her canon height is 165 cm (5'5"), so Lala comes in at the smallish side of 1/6 scale.
Lala with one of my other February acquisitions, Plum's Airi Kashii item/331459. Coincidentally, Airi and Lala are just about the same height, and you can see how the 1/7 Airi and Lala compare.
I do like demon girls, and you can see how the 1/8 scale Elyse item/5864 and the 1/7 scale Leviathan item/195472 compare with Lala.
An alternate view of Elyse, Lala, and Leviathan.
White swimsuits are another one of my moe points, and here are a couple of my favorites with Lala. Miki item/98895 is a largish 1/7 scale, and note how she and Lala compare.
I like the white bikini top + jean shorts combination shared by Lala and Pochaco item/235623 .
My two favorite To Love Ru girls. Haruna item/287789 is a little bit shorter than Lala, and Haruna is a smallish 1/6 scale herself.
Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10
Arguments for: Many. Lala's almost melancholy expression is quire interesting, dat stomach, elaborate hair design, dem shorts, overall good quality.
Arguments against: Not quite 1/6 scale, the box-in-a-box-in-a-box packaging needed will drive up Lala's shipping cost, and a couple of noticeable flaws (the gap around her shorts is the worst offender).
Overall, Alter has made a winner, particularly if you are a fan of Lala or To Love Ru in general. I like To Love Ru as much as the next guy, and the combination of the white microkini, Lala's demon features, and her twintails made this figure an instant preorder, and there are no regrets.
Availability (as of this writing)
Sold out new, available secondhand at a premium price.
This figure was an AmiAmi exclusive, so if you didn't preorder, it'll be the secondhand channels if you want Lala to be yours. She originally sold for 11800 yen, but in the last few days, it looks like some Lalas have sold for 30000 yen. It's tough to say where the price will eventually stabilize once some of these start hitting the various preowned channels, but for now plan on paying a premium for this figure.
